Getting noticed online is the central problem for any digital marketer looking to create a great startup. But there’s a lot of generic advice out there. I’m sure by now you know the basics. You need to optimise your website for search engines. You need to make sure your website is compatible with mobile devices. You have to engage your customers on social media. And you have to know which platforms your audience is most likely to use.
But there are a few little tricks out there that are less well known, and can really help drive your business.
Create A Quirky Identity
Many new companies start out on the right track, but then never fulfill their true potential because they struggle to make an impact. Getting a digital marketing company to create a unique identity for your company can make you more recognisable.
When you think about it, this is what all successful companies do. Their brand is consistent across all their platforms. Their websites are beautifully tailored to their branding, as are their promotions. Heck, sometimes even their emails convey the corporate message.
In a world where everyone has gone online, there are some rather odd marketing channels that remain underutilised. One of these is SMS. The great thing about SMS is that it is not a saturated marketing channel. This means that the marketing itself is more impactful. Evidence suggests that when a potential customer gets a text, they’re far more likely to open it than if they’d received a spam email. And what’s more, once they’ve opened it, they’re far more likely to make a sale.
SMS is also useful because it literally follows people around. You can be sure that within minutes your message will be opened and read. This is useful if you need to quickly update customers on a new offer or a new price on a product they were interested in.
Partner With Somebody Strange
Why do all the junk food providers partner with all the sports organisations? Because they want to change their image.
But you can go one step better than this. Partnering up with a strange bedfellow can go much further than covering up the social costs of your enterprise. You can use it to do something comical or exciting. Think about how Turkish Airlines has recently teamed up with Marvel Comic book characters like Superman and Batman. Now you too can travel to Gotham city – wherever that is – on one of their jets and watch the heroes battle it out.
Do Something A Bit Weird
Colgate, the toothpaste company, wanted their message to go viral. To promote dental hygiene they got an ad agency to make an advert of a child eating a sugary ice cream stick. But there was a twist; the ice cream stick was in the shape of a toothbrush. The message was after you’ve eaten some sugary junk, don’t forget to clean your teeth.
This went viral, and as a result, colossal numbers of people were redirected to the advertiser’s website.
